Film by visual art student official film festival selection

Thursday, August 14, 2014

LAWRENCE – A film created by University of Kansas visual art student, Allison Flom, is an Official Selection of the 2014 Autumn Shorts Film Festival in Somerset, Kentucky. Flom’s film, “Habitual,” is a non-narrative look at feminine domestic and beauty rituals created as a project in her Time-Based Media II class.

“I am very interested in perceptions of women, especially those which we inflict upon ourselves and the effects they have on the psyche,” Flom said. “I aim to create a raw physical and psychological reaction in the viewer with the imagery and audio that I compose.”

Flom explained her exploration into this field of interest was the kick start for her current artwork. The selection of her work by a professional film festival is crucial in creating more professional opportunities for her growing body of work.

“Allison is one of our strongest students. Her work explores the intersections of gender, technology and mediation – often incorporating her own body as an integral part of politicized and hyperactive media mechanisms,” KU visual art professor, Benjamin J. Rosenthal said. “Inserting herself within these situations, technology and media interests project their motives on her body, only to be challenged and reoriented by the performance of that body and the video mechanism itself.”

Flom’s work extends across video, installation, performance, digital imaging and other more traditional forms. Rosenthal is proud of the work being done by Flom and other students who are able to really participate as part of the larger national and global conversation.

“Habitual” is one of 63 films selected for the festival out of nearly 900 submissions. Filmmakers have been invited to attend the festival and participate in a question and answer session following the film screening. Flom’s video may be viewed at https://vimeo.com/65724063.

The Autumn Shorts Film Festival through Somerset Community College Theatre’s Digital Video Productions welcomes submissions of all genres of films of no more than 30 minutes in length. The event is designed to showcase professional, aspiring and independent filmmakers of all ages from the United States and around the world.

The Department of Visual Art is one of four departments in the School of the Arts.
